What Is A Mini Split Air Conditioner?

Are you still suffering through the summer heat simply because your home doesn't have the ducts necessary to support central air conditioning? Perhaps you have tried window units but have found them to be noisy and dreadfully inefficient? Then let's take a minute to talk about mini split air conditioning systems.
What in the world is it?
A mini split system, sometimes called "ductless air conditioning" is a sort of hybrid between central air conditioning and a portable window unit. It is called "split" because it contains two units - the compressor that is installed outside of the building and the air handler that is built into a wall inside the building. Some models will have more than air handler that is serviced by one compressor.
Is it expensive?
A mini split system is more expensive than a window unit, because it does require professional installation. But because the compressor is outside the home, the system is more efficient and usually is quieter than a window unit.

Can I install it myself?
Not unless you are a professional HVAC contractor! Installation requires electricity, drainage and lines for the coolant. Your contractor will also need to charge the unit with the appropriate amount of coolant.
Will there be a hole in the wall?
Yes, there will need to be a hole to accommodate the tubing that connects the compressor to the air handler, but the hole will only be about 3" in diameter, although the exact size depends on how far apart the indoor and outdoor units will be.
Can I cool the house in zones
Yes. You can install a separate air handler in different rooms or areas of the house. Ideally, you would use a separate air handler for each room you want to cool. If you have a lot of open space that allows the air to circulate, you may be able to get away with using just one air handler. It's important to have your HVAC professional calculate the size of the system you will need, based on the number of BTU's necessary to cool the square footage and room layout.
Before the heat of next summer arrives, you may want to research mini split air conditioning systems and decide if one is right for you. You will not only be making yourself more comfortable, but investing in the resale value of your home. Doesn't that make you feel more comfortable already?
